Sporting events offer year-round fun in Berwick, PA PDF Print E-mail

Berwick, Pennsylvania, is nationally known for our high school football program. Our beloved Berwick Bulldogs – or “Dawgs,” as they are better known – are Pennsylvania’s first six-time state champions and the first high school football team to be named three-time national champs by USA Today.

Football is just one of the sporting events that Berwick-area residents have the opportunity to check out. When it comes to spectator sports, our region has many events to attend, including minor- and major-league games in baseball, hockey, football and basketball.

For Arena Football 2, check out the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers, who play their home games in the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza, just northeast of Berwick in Wilkes-Barre.

Experience the excitement of professional baseball at a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees game. The team is the Triple A minor league club of the New York Yankees and draws a crowd throughout the spring, summer and fall.

If hockey’s your sport, head to the ice at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza to see the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, the AHL farm team of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The team made it to the Calder Cup finals in 2000-2001 – only their second year of existence – and to the Calder Cup playoffs in 2007-2008.

For those who want a night at the races, there’s plenty of action at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, which offers live-harness racing and year-round simulcast wagering.

And for more racing, check out the Pocono Raceway, which hosts NASCAR, ARCA, SCCA and IMSA races.

Those who would rather participate in sports can sign up for the national class Steamtown Marathon. The 26.2-mile marathon is certified by USA Track & Field and is held every October in Scranton. Or test your strength at the Wilkes-Barre Triathlon, which is held every August at Harvey’s Lake.

These sporting events join a variety of participant sports, from basketball to Little League, for people of all ages.
