Anyone who knows Berwick, Pennsylvania,
has probably heard of our nationally recognized high school football
program. Our beloved Berwick Bulldogs - or "Dawgs" - are
Pennsylvania 's first six-time state champions and became the first
high school football team to be named three-time national champs
by USA Today.
While football is a passion among
Berwick residents, it's only one recreational aspect
to love about this wonderful area.
When it comes to spectator sports
in general, there are a wide range of events to attend, with several
minor and major league baseball, basketball, hockey and football
teams located nearby.
Professional fans can also enjoy Arena
Football II. The Wilkes-Barre/
Scranton Pioneers play their home games in the fabulous Wachovia Arena
at Casey Plaza just to the northeast in Wilkes-Barre.
All the excitement of professional
baseball can be experienced with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre
Red Barons. The Triple A minor league club of the Philadelphia
Phillies, the Barons are perennial crowd-pleasers every spring,
summer and fall.
How about hockey? During the season,
the hottest team to hit the ice is the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
Penguins. The AHL farm team of the Pittsburgh Penguins, the
local Penguins succeeded in making it to the Calder Cup Finals
in 2000/2001, just their second year of existence!
For those who live for the thrill of a live harness race, there's
always action to be found at Pocono
Downs. Whether you come to play or watch, The Downs is guaranteed
to provide an unforgettable night at the races.
And speaking of racing. You can slip
into high gear and catch the fastest growing sport in America
at the Pocono
International Raceway , which hosts NASCAR, ARCA, SCCA, and
IMSA racing.
And if you'd rather not be a couch
potato you can test your mettle at the national class Steamtown
Marathon, a 26.2-mile USATF-certified marathon held in Scranton
every October or at the Wilkes-Barre
Triathlon held every August at Harvey's Lake.
